Here, the Hensler Family, together with a highly skilled team of craftsmen, have been at work for over three decades. Ken Hensler, our company's founder, made his first custom shag area rug on his wife's sewing machine with scrap yarn in the early 1960's for a designer in California. On their way to enjoy Southern California beach days, Ken would employ his two oldest children and wife to wind yarn around cardboard pieces, snip the ends, and stack them in boxes. The grassroots beginning of what was then called K.R. Hensler Design Area Rugs has flourished into a successful custom area rug company, with three generations of the Hensler Family involved in the creative process. Ken's oldest son Mike, our company's current president, has spent 35 years following in his father's footsteps. Watching his father design new styles, make samples and present them to his customers allowed Mike to observe what amazing things creative people can do given the right tools. Mike's mission is to provide you with the style, shape, size and color choices you need to create beautiful area rugs. The best part of his day is when he wanders around our factory admiring the amazing display of individual creativity made visible. Because we cater to individual creativity, we manufacture the old way, by hand, one rug at a time.
